Firelight featured as example of decolonizing philanthropy
Firelight Foundation is pleased to be featured in two case studies in Framework to Decolonize Child & Youth Philanthropy, a publication by the Elevate Children Funders Group. The full document and its workbook, Rethinking Giving, can be downloaded here.
The case studies describe Firelight’s ten-year journey to decolonize its practice.
The first (on page 58) describes our major research initiative in which we asked community-based organizations and communities in nine African countries what they want and need from Global North philanthropy. (This provides the basis for our approach, community-driven systems change.)
The second (on page 68) focuses on ensuring change at all levels of our organization, including shifting the composition of our board and staff to be majority African, reflecting the continent where we do our grantmaking.
We hope you will download the Framework to Decolonize Child & Youth Philanthropy and its workbook in full. Meanwhile, you can read our two case studies here.
