A Funders View of Resilience
There are 2.5 million children in sub-Saharan Africa who have lost both their parents, 10 million more who have lost one parent. What would the US do if this many children needed support? Africans have responded with care and resilience. Ninety-five percent of children who have lost one or both parents are still with extended family. Five percent are living in institutions or on the street.
Firelight Foundation Director Peter Laugharn recently spoke at the Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Series. He explained that the response of African families and communities to orphaned children is an instructive example of social resilience.
