In our first 10 years of grantmaking (2000-2009), Firelight has awarded more than 1,000 grants totaling about $12 million to community-based organizations (CBOs) serving children in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
In Fiscal Year 2009 (October 2008-September 2009), Firelight’s Board of Directors approved a total of 181 grants in two dockets (March and September), totaling $1.93 million.
Firelight conducted a detailed assessment of its September 2009 docket of grants, which included 87 grants totaling $1.14 million. These grants included:
The median “regular” grant amount in September was $10,000, with grant amounts ranging from a minimum of $3,700 to a maximum of $25,000.
Twenty-seven grants were awarded to ‘emerging’ community-based organizations (CBOs); 26 to ‘expanding’ CBOs; and 19 to ‘established’ CBOs and NGOs.
Sixty-four percent of grantee budget proposals in the September docket was allocated to three sectors: education, economic strengthening, and operational support. The remaining 36 percent was spread among 9 other areas.
Firelight’s grant “loss” rate is approximately 1 percent, meaning that we were able to verify that 99 percent of our grants were used for the purposes for which they were intended.
Firelight grants are the first external funding for more than 30 percent of our grantees. Firelight renews more than 80 percent of our grantees after careful assessment of their proposals. A majority of grantees go on to receive funds from other donors.
